Three steps, no booking
Never touched clay before? Good. Art Play's pottery classes in London are built for first-timers. Choose a hand-building class (£32) or a wheel throwing taster at Shoreditch (£55), both 1.5 hours with clay, tools and an instructor included. Here's what to expect before you book.
Pottery class questions, answered
1. Do I need experience? No. Both classes are designed for complete beginners.
2. How long is a class? 1.5 hours.
3. What should I wear? Comfortable clothes you don't mind getting a little messy.
4. What do I take home? Your hand-built piece goes home with you. On the wheel taster, your favourite piece is glazed and kiln-fired, ready to collect in 4 weeks.
5. Can children come? Hand-building is open to ages 9+ with an adult, and there's a children's class for ages 7+.
Classes are friendly and led by an instructor from start to finish, so you're never left guessing. There's a café and bar in the studio, and at Shoreditch you can add pizza to a hand-building booking.

Which pottery class should a beginner book?
Book hand-building if you want a calm, creative session and a finished piece to take home. Book the wheel throwing taster if you've always wanted to try the potter's wheel: you'll learn to centre the clay and shape a bowl, cup or small vessel, then pick a glaze colour for the piece you like best.

Pottery lessons for groups and occasions
Pottery makes a good date night, birthday or team activity. Two or three of you can book places on the same public class; groups of 8 or more can book a private hand-building session from £28 per person.
