Learning About Switch ROM Terminology

I’ve noticed that people use the word “ROM” pretty loosely when talking about Nintendo Switch games. Sometimes it seems to describe a general game image, while other discussions are much more specific and mention NSP or XCI. I’m trying to understand the terminology properly because I’ve become interested in emulation and digital preservation. I don’t want to download random files without knowing what they contain or where they came from. Instead, I’d like to understand how the different formats are structured and why the emulation community talks about them separately. While researching the subject, I also came across switch-rom.me/, which raised even more questions for me. What terminology should a beginner learn first?

I’d begin by treating “ROM” as a broad term rather than assuming that every ROM is technically the same type of file. XCI is generally associated with cartridge-based content, while NSP is commonly associated with installable software packages. Beyond those, you’ll encounter terms relating to updates, downloadable content, firmware and emulator compatibility. The easiest way to learn is to read technical documentation and follow preservation discussions instead of relying on random file-sharing pages. It’s also useful to understand how different emulator versions handle particular formats, because compatibility can vary. Once the terminology is clear, technical discussions become much easier to follow, and you can better understand what each file actually represents.
